These securities are often backed by the U.S. government, meaning the government guarantees the payments. The company also invests in U.S. Treasury securities and commercial mortgage loans. As a real estate investment trust, or REIT, the company must distribute at least 90 percent of its income to shareholders rather than keeping the profits.
