For employers, they verify job applicants' income, work history, education, and criminal records, and they help companies manage payroll and hiring processes. For lenders and other businesses, they provide credit reports and credit scores on consumers, check for fraud and identity theft, and help with debt collection. They also operate in about 20 countries outside the United States.
